Welcome
to UAB's Department of Physics. We're
delighted you are interested in learning more
about the physics research and education at
UAB. The Department of Physics is part of the School
of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NS&M),
and offers bachelor, master, and Ph.D. degree
programs with research opportunities in astrophysics,
biophysics, condensed matter physics, and optics.
Special opportunities for students include
honors programs and participating in hands-on
research. A multitude of learning activities
exists ranging from special honors courses
and seminars during the freshman year to cutting-edge
research in a world-class laboratory environment.
We have active research programs in applied
and theoretical astrophysics, biophysics, condensed
matter physics, materials science, nanophysics,
optics, lasers, and laser spectroscopy. There
are excellent facilities in our teaching and
research labs supporting student learning.
Opportunities exist for students to do part
of their work at major government and industrial
laboratories. A
summary of the admission, faculty, enrollment,
degrees granted, degree requirements, facilities,
research funding and specialties, and selected
publications appear in the American Institute
of Physics (AIP) publication entitled Graduate Programs in Physics,
Astronomy, and related Fields, where restrictions
to use of the electronic document is described
in the AIP
Copyright statement.
Yes, earning a degree in physics will be
challenging, but rarely is a goal worth pursuing
without work and perseverance. I know you are
ready for the challenges awaiting you at UAB.
Rest assured that UAB and Physics are ready
and able to take you to the next level of achievement.
Please explore our Web site to learn more about
our academic and research programs and the
opportunities awaiting you as a member of our
family. And, I look forward to seeing you on
the UAB campus soon.
